Meet Allen Kisakye, one of our female SafeBoda drivers taking up space in the industry.

Allen is the embodiment of persistence and ambition. A graduate of Social work and Administration from UCU, Allen shares with us her journey on why she joined SafeBoda and how much her life has changed for the better since she joined the community, Read more about Allen’s story here.

Why did you join SafeBoda?

I’m a graduate of social work and administration from UCU. During my job search, every time I applied for jobs I was told I needed to learn how to ride a bike since most of the jobs required travel. Unfortunately, no one was willing to teach me but I really needed the job.Out of desperation, I went to the road and stopped random boda guys to teach me and this is how I learnt how to ride a bike but my job hunt was still unsuccessful.

Luckily I was able to meet the recruitment team at SafeBoda who told me about the benefits of being part of the SafeBoda community.

What has your journey with SafeBoda been like?

Very exciting! The overwhelming love I got from the company, trainers and customers is something I thought I would never experience. Everyone is so kind and generous to me as compared to when I was an ordinary boda.

Since I joined, I have been able to work with a number of organisations that ask me to talk to other women about my line of work which really makes me proud.

My husband is also very proud of me, he calls me a celebrity haha.

Also, being a woman, SafeBoda was the right decision for me because I trust that I’m much safer since all my customers come from the App.

Have you faced any challenges?

I’m a breastfeeding mother of two so for most of the time it’s challenging as I have to take breaks in between work to go home and breastfeed.

I also have to be extra cautious with my dress code. I try to dress up as masculine as I can because I worry that I can be an easy target for thieves since I’m a woman.

Sometimes I get catcalled and insulted by other boda men and it gets really uncomfortable.

Favourite things about SafeBoda?

The love from the community and customers! Nothing can beat that! I also really like how my fellow SafeBodas are always looking out for me while on the road- it makes me feel exceptional.

The company cares for us, from getting a new bike as soon as I joined to getting food relief during the pandemic. I’m really glad I joined the community.
