SafeBoda drivers at the May 2022 Service Week held at the Academy in Kyebando

Every quarter, SafeBoda drivers converge at the SafeBoda Academy for the service week.

In February, we held the first such event of the year to reconnect and re-engage with drivers to enhance their operations. The progress since then has been tremendous.

As part of SafeBoda’s cashless adoption strategy for the drivers for the second quarter, yet another service week was held between the 16th and 20th of May. This was organized to educate the driver community on how they can use the cashless balance on their Wallets to ease their day-to-day operations.

The theme of the week was ‘Manya App Yo’, a Luganda phrase for ‘know your app’, directed at training the drivers about how they can navigate the app and also uphold the spirit of SafeBoda Ubuntu.

The focus points for this service week were bill payments, permit ownership, and bike ownership.

Bill Payments

SafeBoda drivers now have the ability to make bill payments on their SafeBoda driver app. As long as they have a Wallet balance, it is easy to buy Yaka!, pay for water, or renew StarTimes, GoTV, DStv, and Azam TV subscriptions at the most affordable rates.

At the Service Week, the drivers received a 100% Cashback on every bill payment done using the SafeBoda app.

Additionally, a successful bill payment qualified a driver to take part in the spin-the-wheel game (watch video here) where lots of prizes such as helmet bags, fuel vouchers, and airtime, among others, were won.

Permit Ownership

In compliance with the regulatory driver requirements and the city authority guidelines, the SafeBoda drivers are expected to own driving permits that deem them fit to operate on the road.

It is the reason why this particular service week focused on helping the new SafeBoda drivers to acquire and own permits through installment payments.

Interested drivers make a deposit at the SafeBoda Academy, have the application processed, and pay the remainder in daily installments. At 50% payment, the driver can get a provisional permit and the permanent permit is issued at 100% payment.

Bike Ownership

Another ownership opportunity was available for the drivers to get a brand new motorbike on credit.

With SafeBoda partners, including Tugende and Asaak, at the week-long event, a driver was in a position to apply for the motorcycle as long as they had with them a National ID, two guarantors, the stipulated deposit amount, and an active mobile phone number.

Overall, the service week was graced by numerous SafeBoda drivers that had more to take home as they hope for the next quarter’s offering.
